Vocal jazz that is stripped-down, seductive and quietly wonderful.  

"This and That" takes a number of tracks from 2008's "Raise the Roof" and throws in a few new ones.  It's an exclusively acoustic effort, one which allows Ms. Parks' beautiful vocals to shine on an uncluttered stage. It's not that "Raise the Roof" was a cacophonous riot; far from it.  But this album takes her a step deeper into the delicate, dulcet recesses of quality vocal jazz.  There are numerous artists filling this genre with easy listening, smultchy smoothness that passes away hours listening without much impact.  Lizzy Parks, however, is far more engaging - just as you'd expect from the much respected Tru Thoughts label.

A few tracks, including the title, brought Kate Bush to mind for their haunting touches.  Others, like "Forever And A Day", showcase a sassier, classic singing style.  The mix works well.  As the album weaves its way along, a range of moods are summonsed that all demonstrate different aspects of the singer's talents.  It feels like a new journey, not just a clutch of remakes.

In may ways, this is a far more accomplished set of tracks than the album title suggests.  Where many acoustic offerings fail to impress, "This and That" triumphs. "Less Is More" would have been just as apt a title.
