Sexual performance, celebrity culture, stoned siblings... you name it, Lily Allen will have a dig at it. Third single "22" from "It's Not Me, It's You" hones in on a young woman already past it. Accordion-esque synths reminiscent of fairgrounds of yesteryear kick start this latest offering...and you immediately know what you're about to get. A swinging backbeat laden with all manner of infantile hooks reminds us just what Lily Allen does best - cheeky pop songs. The lyrics, as brutally blunt as they are, dont deter from the fact that this little ditty wouldn't be out of place as a backing track for a game of pass-the-parcel at a birthday party. And I mean that in a good way. The ability to express the frankest of statements, in the style of what feels and sounds more like a nursery rhyme, is perhaps the boldest statement of all. 8/10 |
